OSIL (Ocean Scientific International Ltd.) have supplied Bournemouth & West Hants Water with a Slick Sleuth™ Oil Spill Detector for use on their two new reservoirs at Longham. Bournemouth and West Hants Water installed the Slick Sleuth™ as part of their on-going commitment to protect their water supply.
The Longham reservoirs (opened on 23rd August 2010) hold 1,000 megalitres of untreated water, which is approximately 15 days supply to the Bournemouth area. The intakes to the 100-acre site are fed directly from the River Stour, and are being continually monitored by a Slick Sleuth™ as an added precautionary measure to ensure that hydrocarbons do not enter the water system.
The Slick Sleuth™ is ideal for this application, as it is capable of detecting the lightest (micron level) sheen of oils and hydrocarbons in real-time. It uses a UV light source and optical sensor, and can instantly open or close relays in order to operate valves and pumps. The unit can also be configured to alert operators with audio and visual alarms.
The rugged, weatherproof design of the Slick Sleuth™ means it can be remotely deployed and, due to its unique non-contact optical sensor it does not require cleaning, as they are sited above the water level (typically 1-3 metres). Data can be transmitted by hardwire or wireless technology, meaning that the units are low-maintenance and trouble free to operate. The Slick Sleuth™ is suitable for use over solid surfaces, not just liquids, and the latest model is now available for use in ATEX Zone 1/ Class 1 Division 1 locations (hazardous/explosive environments).
