Over the last 10-15 years, RS Aqua Ltd (Hampshire, UK) has supplied several Argos Direction Finders to clients in the UK and abroad. The DF unit (known as the GONIO 400) was manufactured in France and, due to RS Aqua's association with Argos location beacon manufacturer Cobham Tracking & Locating (Canada), they established a reasonably extensive customer base. These devices assist researchers and surveyors when in close proximity to their Argos tagged equipment by identifying and pinpointing the location and heading of signals from the source Argos transmitter over a distance of several kilometres. A typical application would be a research vessel trying to locate a seabed lander that has surfaced from the deep.

The GONIO 400 ceased production some 5 years ago, due to component discontinuance, and its replacement failed to match up to its billing - it didn't work!

RS Aqua has a contact list of users and would be users (several names from significant organisations) all very keen to be owners of working Argos DF units. The problem for RS Aqua is that they have been unable to find a manufacturer offering a reliable, practical and economic solution or, to be honest, any solution at all that encompasses the "reliable" qualification.

The assessment is that the market is far from extensive but it is definitely out there and involves several top quality research centres and commercial users.

RS Aqua has a "skeleton" specification which it can provide to would be manufacturers. The company seeks a product trading agreement with any company that can meet the requirement.

First course of action would be to email comments to Roger Scrivens, MD at RS Aqua Ltd, via r.scrivens@rsaqua.co.uk quoting "RSA ref MP1204" in the subject header to establish a dialogue
