Tideland Signal Limited has supplied a a large polyethylene buoy and LED lantern complete with meteorological and hydrological sensing equipment for the new Kongsberg Norcontrol VTMIS (vessel traffic management and information system) installed in the port of Rijeka, Croatia.
Tideland's buoy is designated Oto Krk and is stationed 5.5NM south west of the control centre in Rijeka, some 2 NM offshore from the mainland and a similar distance from the island of Krk. The meteorological and hydrological information it supplies is considered extremely important because the area is subject to strong winds blowing off the mountains at the back of the port.
The buoy carries a Tideland MLED-140 lantern with the powerful new, MaxiHALO-60 array, giving a range of 6 NM. It combines the proven MaxLumina® lens with the benefits of modern LED technology, using less than half the power of the previous generation of LEDs. Easy to install and requiring no focussing, the MLED-140 MaxiHALO is particularly suitable for wide beam applications where there is a need to compensate for buoy roll. It also offers built-in, hard-wired synchronization, 256 user-selectable flash characters and full monitor and control capability of light status and battery voltage.
In addition to the lantern system, Tideland supplied the buoy complete with mooring chains, a radar enhancer and sensing equipment to detect air pressure, air temperature, wind direction and strength, current water speed and direction, wave height and direction.
Tideland's SB-285P buoy is extremely robust, with a frame of marine-grade stainless steel supporting float and tower assemblies in high quality polyethylene and equipped with mooring and lifting eyes. Both the float and tower units are rotationally moulded to ensure a seamless body, using a pigmented, UV-stabilised polymer.
