Hydro8, the 16th European Hydro Symposium in this year's European Capital of Culture, Liverpool, from 4-6 November promises to be a key event in the world hydrographic calendar, according to its organisers, The Hydrographic Society UK, which is staging the biennial proceedings on behalf of The International Federation of Hydrographic Societies.
The three-day event, which is being held in Liverpool's historic Britannia Adelphi Hotel, will feature over 50 leading exhibitor companies and organisations in addition to eight main conference sessions with speakers from Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Netherlands, Sweden, the UK and USA. Rear Admiral Ian Moncrieff, National Hydrographer of the UK, will open proceedings with a keynote address dealing with the main conference theme, New Opportunities.
Individual conference sessions will cover Coastal Mapping Techniques & Applications, Data Handling & Presentation, Tides & Currents, Standards & Training, The Marine Environment, Precise Positioning and Hydrography for Marine Renewables. Fringe events include afternoon technical workshops, demonstrations and vessel visits at the nearby Albert Dock while there will also be opportunities to visit locally-based Proudman Oceanography Laboratory, one of the world's leading oceanographic research organisations.
A wide-ranging social programme includes organised visits to the Merseyside Maritime Museum and Liverpool's two famous football grounds, Anfield and Goodison Park. Meanwhile, the City's celebrated Georgian Town Hall is the setting for the customary Symposium dinner for delegates at which the Lord Mayor will be present.
Hydro8 is officially supported by International Ocean Systems, Ocean Scientific Instruments Ltd (OSIL), Seawohelen@hydrographicsociety.org).
